The significance of serving others can never be over emphasized. King Benjamin said “When you are in the service of the fellow beings you are only in the service of your god”. This is a very powerful statement but it is the truth.
How many of us think that we are too busy to think of other who needs us? In a single day have we answered to the call of anyone who needs our help just when we are trying to get something done? Following is a touchable story that is related to love and compassion.
The Seattle Special Olympics only had nine contestants who were equipped to run a
100-yard race; all of the contestants were children and they were physically or mentally handicapped. The children were filled with joy. Each and everyone in the place cheered the children. The parents and relatives called out their child name and encouraged them. Since one of them has the proud privilege to keep their child trophy in the living room for all to see it.
As the race started and all the contestants were about to reach the finishing line a small boy stumbled and fell down on the ground. On hearing the weep of the boy all the other eight participants slowed down and each one turned around and went back to help the young boy. All their thoughts of winning the race have gone since their friend was in a trouble.
A girl suffering from Down’s syndrome kissed the boy and said “this will make it better”.
All the nine contestants linked their arms together and walked to the finishing line together. There was even a single dry eye in the congregation when they saw the act of compassion and love for others. Everyone in the stadium stood up and cheered the participants by the claps and tears.
The best that really matter in our life is that helping others to win. It is not where we serve and whom we serve but it is how we serve. We must serve with love and compassion. We will have our rewards when we serve others with love and that reward bring us great joy.
During a war a young soldier asked his commanding officer to that if he could save his co-comrade who was severely wounded. The officer stood a while and thought by narrowing his eyes and then said I will give you permission but it is not worthy. Your friend may be dead and you will be putting your own life in risk.
The young solider saluted the officer and proceeded in his own way. The solider ran by escaping from the fired bullets and he managed to reach his friend. He took his friend in his shoulder and quickly brought him to the trench.
The officer inspected the wounded soldier and said that he was dead. He looked at the young solider and also sawed a red spot on his shirt and he added that you are wounded and I told you know that it wound be worthy.
The young officer said that it was a worth only sir.
The officer said that you are wounded and it was all for nothing.
The solider replied no sir it was a worth one since when I knelt down beside my friend he said to me that “I know you will come”.
